Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom every day, and lack of resources is one of them.
My students are passionate about learning and I want to provide them with all the support necessary so that they reach their personal and academic goals.
Yet, how can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? Creating a love of reading in my students will close the achievement gap, but to do that I need to give them access to reading materials they are excited about in the classroom.
My Project
I am requesting various children's books like "The Lorax", "The Giving Tree" and "The Rainbow Fish" because these children's books have valuable life lessons and one of the core standards for 8th grade is that students need to be able to identify theme in a text. Students will read these children's books and identify the theme in the book and give evidence to support their opinion. I also think that this activity will encourage kids to read books of all levels for knowledge and not to be ashamed of their reading levels. I also want to remind them about the joys of reading. Unfortunately students lose the love for reading as they get older and I think this is a great activity to reconnect them to the love of reading they had at a young age and get them excited about reading again.
