The other day my student was creating an "All About Me Book". One question asked her to say how her friends would describe her, she wrote that her friends think that she is weird. My students need to opportunity to learn and practice social skills, so they can feel more comfortable with their peers
I am a Learning Support teacher in Pennsylvania.
My students range from K-3. All of my students spend a majority of their day in the general education classroom and I take them out to work on various skills. Although I have students with a range of disabilities, a large percent of my students are on the Autism Spectrum. Many of those students come to my room daily to work on social skills. Since these students do spend a majority of their time in the classroom with their peers, it is important that they learn social skills in order to be successful both academically and socially.
My Project
Last year when I began teaching at my school I was told that I would be teaching social skills, but was given no materials to do so. All the materials that I used last year were either bought by myself or the speech teacher. Now that I am teaching social skills again with many of the students, I have ran out of materials ( and money) to get more materials. I really need these games on social stories in order to continue to help my students.
I think that the most important aspect of teaching is building the students self esteem.
My students with Autism are academically very bright, but many lack the social skills in order to fully thrive in the classroom. I want my students to continue to make friends and take advantage of every opportunity in both school and their futures.
