Teaching Technology Purpose in Pre-K

Help me give my students the ability to know that iPads are for learning not just playing.

My Students

I teach special education pre-school. Some children are non-verbal, some are in wheelchairs, and others may have a speech delay, or behavior problems socializing, or developmental delays in cognitive or maturity. No matter their different backgrounds, they embrace one another without judgment.

These children are ready to learn.

Literacy is learned from visual aspects, understanding patterns, language and, of course, books. I need to build my book area with a variety of books and tools to fuel their already excitement to learn and understand the world.

My Project

I have 24 active preschoolers. Most of them have access to technology at home. When they come to school they often talk about what they are doing on their iPads at home.

First, it is important for them to learn that iPads are not just for home and games.

They are for educational use also. This will help them understand that iPads are NOT just toys.

I have a visually impaired child that needs his own iPad at small groups when reading books. This is a great way for him to follow along and still see the pages. The other kids crowd around his iPad and want to see what it is for.

Second, by letting each child have their own iPad during small group for specialized lessons would allow me to introduce them to valuable time-worthy apps and uses. For example, geoboards are fun and have used for the classroom. But a child that doesn't have the fine-motor to put the rubber band around the peg would benefit from his/her own iPad.

Third, I would continue to use materials in the class and use an iPad to enhance learning for those that wouldn't be able to manipulate the material. And if all the kids could have an iPad at a small group, some kids would be great peer models for those kids that are just learning to use the iPad apps or geoboard app.
