Teaching Students to Conceptualize Math

My students need hands-on opportunities to explore math concepts and create a deeper conceptual understanding in the classroom this year. They need tiles, markers and centers.

My Students

"Be as smart as you can, but remember that it is always better to be wise than to be smart." (Alan Alda) This year my students will grapple with mathematical problems and become wise mathematicians who can apply math to the world around them and they need manipulatives to accomplish this.

We are a class of 20 students in the District of Columbia at a Title I school.

We have a diverse population of student needs and the majority of my kids come from low-income families. They are eager learners and thrive when given opportunities to try new skills in meaningful ways. They love challenges in learning that allow them to touch, discuss, write, and fully engage in mathematical content.

My Project

Using manipulatives in math is important in order to ensure that my students master content in a way that is applicable to more than just a standardized tests. I am requesting tools that visually represent concepts such as fractions, multiplication, division, shapes, and angles.

In order to teach content in a way that is applicable to the skills they will need for college, my students need tools to use as they build their math knowledge.

I want them to leave fourth grade prepared to be problem solvers and critical thinkers and they need math tools to do this.
