I teach at a school in Iowa that includes students from many backgrounds, such as farming families, small towns, and large cities. Our students are very diverse. And sadly about 50% of our students come from impoverished homes. Teachers strive every day to teach to the whole child, incorporating all aspects of teaching, academics, social-emotional learning, and social skills. We have access to excellent resources to teach math, reading, science, and social studies. Our school counselors have access to great social-emotional curriculum materials. But we struggle to provide social skill instruction. At our school (and our district) we have put student and staff mental health at the top of our priorities during a pandemic.
During the 2021-2022 school year, we are focusing on providing additional instruction to support student's mental health and social-emotional growth.
An important component of social-emotional growth is emotional regulation.
My Project
Social-emotional skills can help students be successful in school by building positive relationships with peers and adults through games and activities. We are asking for items such as social skills and mindfulness games and activities. We are also asking for some fidget toys to replenish our supply. Fidget toys are used throughout the school day and they help students feel more comfortable when talking with adults.
With this project, we are hoping to expand our materials to provide more opportunities to increase our social-emotional learning through mindfulness, emotional regulation, and feelings recognition.
There is a direct correlation between poor social skills, problem behavior, and poor academic success, therefore we feel that teaching positive social skills, mindfulness and emotional regulation will help students become more successful both academically and in their social life. The materials below will create ways to generate therapeutic conversations and help students to improve their interpersonal skills. Some of these new materials will help us explore mindfulness in the classroom. Mindfulness can have a positive impact on student's academic success by enhancing their cognitive abilities such as memory, analytical thinking, and creativity.
Finally, teaching emotional regulation, helps students learn how to take part in groups and develop positive peer relationships. We will also utilize these materials for small group instruction with students who need additional support with their social skill development.
