The students at my high school are very diverse. The goal for my conceptual physics class is to teach physics by using concepts and also keeping the math very light. This usually attracts kids who are more interested in the liberal arts or who are interested in trade school rather than college. While these kids may not be the highest academically achieving students, many are brilliant in their ability to apply physics to hands-on projects.
My IB and AP students are very motivated and usually excel in math.
The majority of these students plan to attend universities throughout the country and major in the medical fields or engineering.
My Project
This project will quickly get my students immersed in STEM by using drones as a way to teach various core concepts in physics. For example the physics of the drone can be used to teach concepts like Newton's Three Law's, Bernoulli's Principle, angular kinematics and momentum, lift, thrust and drag.
After using the drone as a tool for teaching basic concepts in physics, the instructor will organize the students in teams to accomplish a given mission.
With this mission, the students will first learn how to fly their drone. In order to obtain pilot certification they will be required to fly their drone through a given course. The students will next program their drones to fly a given path and accomplish a task given to them. For example, their task may be to act as a "Amazon" delivery drone in delivering a package from one point to another in following a given path. The team which accomplishes this mission in the most efficient manner will be declared the winner and obtain the "government contract".
The students will debrief after this experience to explain what they learned and how they would improve their code if they were to do this again.
The instructor will make sure that students practice safe procedures throughout this process to keep all students from harm.
The 8 Mambo Fly drones will be used for the student groups. This will allow every 3-4 students to have access to a drone.
The Parrot Mambo FPV will be used by the instructor for demonstration purposes.
