Help me give my students the opportunity to learn how to navigate different social situations in the moment with step by step directions of what to do, say, and/or how to stand from the teacher.
"Look, Ms. H!" "I am a superstar today in class." These are some very exciting words coming from a student who was able to go into their general education classroom and be with their peers, all while managing their own behavior. Witnessing the joy and excitement that a student exhibits when they use the strategies you taught them on how to work through difficult situations is breathtaking. I currently teach students in 6th through 8th grade who are primarily on the autism spectrum. The have the biggest hearts that you can imagine accompanied by a love for learning. Sometime these children have difficulties communicating their thoughts, and navigating the social world. I could not ask for a better job. It is so rewarding to work with these kiddos. My goal is to prepare them for the success I know they are capable of achieving in years to come.
My Project
All of our students want to be able to understand how to navigate different social situations both in school and in the community. Currently, our class learns social rules by reading books and watching role-playing videos. In class, the virtual reality program will allow the students to enter different social situations with the teacher guiding them with how to navigate the situation (what to say, do, and even how to stand). The virtual reality program will give the students first-hand experience of how to properly navigate different social situations as it can be very scary. The program will allow the teacher to guide the students in what they say, do, and even how they stand in actual situations.
