My Students
I am a special needs teacher and work with many students in grades 4-5 who are included in the general education classroom. My students have varying disabilities; I work with students with autism, learning disabilities, and more! My students love to learn, but they sometimes just need a different approach to understand concepts and retain important skills taught in class. They often need hands-on materials to make their learning engaging and meaningful and to see tangible representations of what they are learning!
My Project
Many of my students have unique needs that require specific instruction on social skills and executive functioning skills to help them be successful in the general education classroom. By using literature, students are able to get an introduction to specific skill sets that need to be taught, and then use it as a platform to relate to their own experiences.
Because many students with special needs have problems with expressive, receptive, verbal, and non-verbal language, they often struggle with developing and maintaining friendships and have difficulty with tasks related to executive functioning skills.
Using children's literature for teaching social and executive functioning skills can be invaluable to students and to teachers. I have chosen to use the Julia Cook series, as it is one that I have seen success with in helping my students process different strategies they need to be successful in the classroom.
