My Students
The majority of my students come from low-income households. Many receive little to no help from parents for school supplies or moral support for school work. I have two classes of freshmen, each with about 25 students, at the College Preparation level. Almost all of my students fall into the category of low-income.
Without help from generous donors, my students may be severely lacking in terms of supplies needed for school.
My students need access to literature outside of their textbooks.
My Project
I center my curriculum on themes of social justice. My favorite novel of all time is Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. This being said, Mockingbird lacks a plot that gives autonomy to its black characters. In college, I was introduced to the novel All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. The novel is a dual narrative from the points of view of two teenage boys: one white, and one black. It focuses on the events surrounding the black boy being falsely accused of robbing a convenience store and subsequently being severely beaten by a police officer.
The novel would be a fantastic medium with which to connect the older themes of Mockingbird with current events.
