My Students

We are a very diverse community. Our students come from low-income, high-needs homes. Over 67% of our students are eligible for free- or reduced-lunch and some of our students are homeless. Despite these hardships, our kids come in everyday with a smile, ready to learn.

Our kids are innovators.

They are thinkers, they try new things and always want to know, "what if...?" They are full of energy and have a love for learning that is indescribable.

Family and Consumer Science classes are taught on a semester schedule. By the end of the school year, we will have taught the entire sixth grade (which is roughly 160 students) and approximately 40 eighth graders. Each class period ranges from 15-20 students diverse in learning styles and abilities. We have ENL (English Language Learner) students who can understand English at various levels, but cannot write it or speak it very well. Our students range from very low iReady reading and math scores to gifted.

My Project

My classroom has a brand new, modern kitchen, with some outdated equipment. A lot of our current, small appliances, are very old; some being from the 1980's.

The Kitchen Aid mixer will allow for advanced foods lessons.

We currently do not have mixers that are powerful enough to make heavier dough. Therefore, having this option would open up to so many more lesson possibilities.

We currently use very basic blenders for the smoothie lab. Having a higher powered blender would allow for much better, healthier, smoothie recipes.

I also plan to create lessons comparing the old equipment to the more modern equipment and discussing how technology has changed the way we do things.
