This summer I took a weeklong class entitled AB466 Professional Development Program. I was instructed in how to better utilize my Harcourt Brace Teacher's Edition to teach mathematics. I learned many new teaching strategies and games that I am anxious to implement in my Second Grade class. Our school does not provide many math manipulatives. I selected some from the Delta Education Catalog. First, I could use a complete set of unifix cubes. These can be utilized to teach patterning, addition and subtraction as inverse operations, and multiplication arrays. I will share them with my other Second grade colleagues. I will then have enough for over 60 students. I also selected a kit on graphing for use with the overhead projector and a kit on teaching fractions. These materials will enhance my math curriculum as my students experience graphing and fractions hand-on. I find that the kinesthetic approach in teaching mathematics is motivation and successful.
