This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The idea behind this proposal was born last year when a sub told me that I taught more Arts and Crafts than Science. After reflecting on that statement it came to be that in fact I do use many of the Arts to bring Science to life for my students. Walk in and you might see my students dancing and singing and a week does not go by without them creating some form of art that displays a scientific theme. So this summer I did some research and found out much about the Arts in the classroom. Did you know that there were studies that prove that young students learn more when they ?think' they are playing? Did you know that studies also show that students that excel in the Arts excel in other areas of learning? I always knew this to be true for I am an extremely creative person and I love to express my learning in creative means.
Then it dawned on me that maybe out in the world there were craft kits that might be geared toward Science. I was not looking for models of a volcano or anything like that. I was searching for crafts that my students could create while we were discussing the science behind it and then instead of decorating my room with these creations sending them home with extensions to further their knowledge of the subject matter. I was amazed at all I found. Sure I expected to find pinwheels, wind-chimes, sun-catchers and even birdhouses, however my search brought to my attention so many other projects that I had to sit down and write this proposal. I have come across ideas for kaleidoscopes, animal creations with habitats and food chain themes, sound creations, rainbow collectors, weather creations, thermometers with paper back that can be used in magnets and sun-catchers and so much more.
The monies from this proposal will allow me to bring all this into my class and place this new learning expression into the hands of my students. With my students ranging from PreK to Second Grade, I teach many brothers and sisters these items will trigger many discussions at home about what was learned in the classroom. How you might ask let me give you an example. One week in class we are covering temperature and how it changes. Second graders create sun-catcher thermometers that attach to windows and are given the direction to attach it to a window at home and collect the data at certain times of the day for a week. Kinder graders create a magnet thermometer that attaches to a magnet that can go on the fridge and again they are given the same times as the second grade for a week. We know the temps will be different but do they? Do they know why? My students are bright and they will discuss the change and want to know why. They will ask someone who will direct them to learning why the difference at the same place at the same time. This goes beyond classroom learning. In a nut shell, this grant will allow the use of the Arts in the creation of tangible items as they learn the science concepts in the classroom and extend that knowledge in their home as they compare what they learn to what others in their family has learned and as they share that knowledge with their parents.
Oh and as for the sub, she is now teaching Science and Oh she is also using the Arts to teach the subject matter.
