Our students are unique, and they need our support all their way through. This is so because they have a common story with layers that make traditional education settings difficult for them. Many of them come from different countries with different levels of difficulties with the English language. They need constant motivation, engagement, and challenge to best function. We recognize that our students need a variety and multiple opportunities to learn, develop, and grow. As an alternative public high school, we allow students in our classrooms to interact making the environment free and creative for them. This is our way to motivate them to be more engaged and use another type of intelligence.
Due to interruptions in their education and social-emotional traumas in their lives, our students need more support than average students.
In summary, it requires a great deal of energy and caring to be able to offer our students what they need to be successful.
My Project
My attendance at the National Conference on Science Education will enhance my teaching practice of science to ELL (English language learner) students. This will allow me to create partnerships/relationships with other colleagues so that I can connect my students to other practices and/or professionals and organizations that can give them greater exposure to the field of science.
This project may also lead to future field trips, mentoring, and other resources to enhance instruction to the benefit of my ELL science students' success.
Considering that I work with a large ELL minority population, teaching science to them, the knowledge and resources that I will gain will allow expanding my ability to provide more opportunities for my students to better engage them in science classes, such as environmental science, biology, chemistry, physics, etc. For the reasons stated above, which can be summarized by saying to better serve my students, I want to go to the National Conference on Science Education, in Boston, MA from April 02 to April 05, 2020.
