Teaching Science Outside The Classroom Creates Greater Excitement And Participation.
Help me give my students the joy of an introduction to the sciences. Each of the included lessons in this cart will be used to help the students on Lana’i to create potential career goals.
Our school is on a tiny island and is one of a few K-12 schools in the State of Hawaii. There is one major employer here on the island and the school struggles with funding. The students are fantastic. In town when you wave them across the street they return a wave of gratitude. In class, they are eager to learn and appreciate their teachers and the cafeteria staff. Many study hard with dreams of getting off the island and into a good career.
My Project
What this cart includes are activities in physics, marine science and environmental science. On the island these are valuable to each resident and for each student to consider in college decisions. On this small island we have a growing hydroponics farm, a solar farm, and many other farms. The days of the pineapple plantation are over.
The activities in this project expose the students to a diverse set of opportunities that our environment provides to each of us, and well very may be connected to the career they choose.
That’s one small reason why I love teaching science here. Mahalo.
