My students are hungry for a voice, choice, and engaging books. They are creative, thoughtful, and full of questions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically.
As a Title I school, just out of Sacramento, CA, students often come in saying they have difficulty completing assignments/reading at home because of lack of supplies, resources, support, and a conducive learning environment.
I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's need for a conducive learning environment is met. They are truly an incredible, open-minded, diverse group and I can’t wait to enhance their learning experience!
My Project
These books will complete and enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My class novels are specifically chosen so that students really enjoy reading! Ghost by Jason Reynolds has been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to gain exposure to engaging literature, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
With these new books, I will have a complete class set so that I can not only read this book in small groups but also in my grade level English classes.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in engaging literature, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
