Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a 3rd grade Dual Language class with 18 students that really are just my rays of light. The bright smiles that greet me every morning and their voices and inquiring minds is why I teach. They are all Hispanic in a school that consists of mostly Hispanic and African American students who all qualify for free school lunch.
Many of my students face so many challenges both from home and difficulty learning, but they are truly inspiring in their resilience to want to learn and never give up.
All that I want is for all of them to realize their true potentials of success. They are the future doctors, journalists, teachers, lawyers, businessmen/women......they are the ones that will contribute to this world and I always want them to remember their greatness.
My Project
For the past few years I have been on a personal journey of mindfulness. It has been a most comforting experience learning specific tools to balance all of life's roles, but it has been something that I feel is important for peace of mind as well. I've seen the value of my mindful practices for myself and thought how crucial it is for my students to learn this practice as well. I have introduced breathing exercises to my students so far and they never fail to remind me to do them when we return from lunch. They have expressed how they enjoy the exercises and, I would love to teach them more mindful practices. I would love to be trained in it more though, so that I may teach it correctly.
I can only imagine the positive effects this would be on my students and the transformation that would happen in each one of them if they could practice yoga and mindfulness more often.
The school I work at is located in Spanish Harlem and I feel so proud to be working with the students and staff in which I have learned and continue to learn so much from. I do worry for the students though because they face a lot of difficulties that children shouldn't have to face. Majority are from low-income, minority families or living in shelters. The students just have so much on their minds that teaching wellness and mindfulness would allow them to realize that they matter. With the current events and concerns for students well being through this training students will receive the coping tools that is needed to deal with life's challenges.
