Teaching Mind-Body Awareness and Fitness Through Yoga

My Students

I teach first grade in a public K-5 school out on the westside of the island of Kauai. My students really benefit from the physical, social, and emotional benefits of yoga in the classroom. I have been training in mindfulness and yoga for several years, and I would love for my class to be able to work with yoga mats to safely practice yoga regularly. My school is a Title 1 school, and my students come from a variety of backgrounds. We are looking forward to the unifying practice of yoga together!

My Project

Kids LOVE yoga! With a class set of yoga mats my students will be able to practice poses daily, both in the classroom and out on the grass. We can practice breathing exercises and fun yoga games that are tools students can take away from the classroom into their own homes.

A growing body of research has already shown that yoga can improve focus, memory, self-esteem, academic performance, and classroom behavior, and can even reduce anxiety and stress in children.

Through yoga, kids start to realize that they are strong and then are able to take that strength, confidence, acceptance, and compassion out into the world.
