Teaching Middle School Math Online, and Making it Fun!
Help me give my students an opportunity to love math. BrainPOP is so useful in grabbing the attention of the students and watching them grow. Studies of teachers using BrainPOP show that students gain a deeper understanding.
To fill in the gaps, I have to grab their attention and make them excited about math. I have a group of students in great need. My students, although in regular classrooms, are very low, and I am tasked with filling the gaps as many of my students are as low as a second grade math level. I also teach current 8th grade math standards. You can imagine how difficult this is, and how frustrating it can be for the students.
To help facilitate their understanding, I play games with the students, use online tools that keeps them engaged, and continuously have checks-ins with them and their parents to help keep them on track.
This can be very rewarding, but very costly and time consuming as well. I work anywhere between 60 and 70 hours per week, coming up with free tasks that would help my students, and if I can't find the tasks, I make them myself. I work hard to make sure my students have the best opportunity to catch up, and have fun with school, but most of that means that I pay out of pocket and work through all my breaks and time off.
My Project
Since my students are so low, I can use BrainPOP to gradually help my students understand concepts they didn't get when they should have, for whatever reason. Most kids don't learn from lectures, they learn from fun, interactive tools. They also learn from each other. BrainPOP allows fun interaction with each other while learning skills they need from previous grades, as well as current grade level standards.
BrainPOP would be a great addition to my small groups, and whole classroom activities, as we work together and have fun learning.
I love creating games and interactive activities; this would give me a much larger library to assist my kids, both struggling and not struggling. I love them all, and they know it. I tell them every day, even at 8th grade. By giving them every opportunity to grow and learn, they start to see that they can do it. They gain confidence in themselves and then strive for more. iI's amazing how one little click can launch them into great educational success.
