My students walk into class every day full of wonder, full of energy, and full of resilience. Each day in the classroom is a chance to shine and start fresh no matter what outside distractions may await them at home or in their community. I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.
I teach at a Title I School in Massachusetts, where 61% percent of our students are considered economically disadvantaged.
A handful of students receives plastic bags of food on the weekend, and we have Catie's Closet on hand for students that need clothing. We have students from a variety of backgrounds. We host students that have just arrived in the United States, we have special education students, students with visual and auditory deficits, and students with trauma. My students are so much more than these descriptions. These amazing kids just want a chance, a glimpse into a future, where they are allowed to dream big.
My Project
This scientific microscope will be used to ignite and teach students about the complex structures of plants and organisms. Through this teaching microscope, students will have the opportunity to see what the world looks like on the smallest level. This will hopefully increase their scientific appetites.
With the use of this microscope and accompanying slides, all students will get a chance to view the tiniest of organisms and they will get to see it in style on the big screen!
We cover plant structures as well as crayfish anatomy in third grade and this will give students an even closer look. I think this microscope will add another dimension to student learning. And the fact that the microscope can be viewed on the Smartboard will allow students even with visual impairments to get a glimpse at all the cool things that microscopes can reveal to us. Thank you for considering our project!
