Teaching Life Skills - Calm Down Corner & Pretend Play

Help me give my students a calm down corner and a kitchen for pretend play. This includes giant pillows, a pretend kitchen, wobble chairs, and other items.

My Students

My students are part of a special education self-contained severe unit classroom. This year I have ten students in my classroom, and they range from Kindergarten through 4th grade. I am in my fifth year of teaching.

I chose to become a special education teacher because of the special students that I serve.

Each of them has a unique personality, and their disabilities can include autism, Down syndrome, and intellectual and developmental delays. I have them in my classroom K-4, so I get to know them extremely well and get to know and love their families.

The school I teach at is Title I with more than half of the students from low-income families.

My Project

Two of many important skills that are taught in a severe special education classroom are appropriate play and learning calm down strategies. Many children with ASD have to be encouraged and taught how to play and especially with others. The kitchen and supplies makes an inviting area for this natural play to occur. The calm down area gives a separate space in the classroom for students to take a break and learn calming down techniques.

The calm down corner will give a special space that students can go to learn calming down strategies and the kitchen will promote and develop pretend play and interaction amongst peers.

The products that I have selected will promote play, language and social emotional development. These skills are important to learn at a young age so as the student grows they are able to interact more with peers in an appropriate way.
