My Students

The students are resilient and tough. Many of them come from struggling family situations that make it difficult for them to attend or have a conducive learning environment. They are all deficient in credit and our school is one of their last resorts for them to earn a high school diploma in a traditional setting.

One thing I have realized when interacting with these students is that up until now, many of them do not have any positive experiences with teachers or the public educational system.

They all seem to feel that their community and their schools have been unsupportive and uncaring to their individual circumstances which in turn has given them the justification that if no one else believes in them or sees worth in them, then they don't see it in themselves which made their educational experiences difficult and unsuccessful. Many of them are behind credit and perform at low levels.

My Project

Having a good set of headphones will help students feel more comfortable with creating podcasts and videos on what they have learned. Being able to have alternative methods of showing students' proficiency is a great option for those who would rather demonstrate their knowledge of a topic through speaking instead of writing.

The headphones will also help them focus on their best performances in annual assessments that test their listening and speaking skills, especially for my ELL students.

They are expected to take the WIDA test every year and two of the components that they are tested on are Listening and Speaking. They are often intimidated to do the speaking part, so having headsets that work well is extremely important for them.
