This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach fourth grade at a school in inner-city Los Angeles. My students are brimming with curiosity and work hard to achieve their academic goals. As part of an environmental science magnet school, I strive to offer a hands-on, inquiry-based, experiential science curriculum. My school is located in an urban environment, and my students haven't had much experience with outdoor learning. This project aims to get my students outside to discover all the exciting wildlife that exists right under their noses.

My Project

The "Primary Sources: California" kit will help me bring our Social Studies curriculum to life. In fourth grade we study our state's fascinating history, from it's original Native American cultures to Spanish Colonization to the mass immigration that began with the Gold Rush in 1849. We also learn about the geography and economy of the state. This kit includes primary documents such as photographs, maps, letters, political cartoons, newspaper articles and pamphlets from each of the major time periods we study. Primary sources are always engaging for students and they require them to use their critical thinking skills to come to a deeper understanding of historical events.
