Teaching first-graders to read with the Berenstain Bears

My Students
As a child, I loved the Berenstain Bears books. They were easy to read, and they taught great social skills. I want my first graders to be able to learn to read using these wonderful materials.
This next year, my district will face serious cutbacks. As a result, I will have a large class of young children who really need special materials that won't be readily available due to budget limitations. My first graders need to have books read to them, books to read independently, and many opportunities to practice. They will also need books that provide them with social skill instruction.
My Project
I am requesting a collection of Berenstain Bears books that I can read to my students and that they can keep in their individual book boxes for independent reading time. I am also requesting Berenstain Bear books on CD with speakers and headphones so that the kids can listen to the stories independently or as an entire class. Finally, I am requesting a fun puppet that will help us to discuss the social issues brought up in these books.
I feel that this project will add that "personal connection" my kids will need as they develop their reading and social skills. This project will add fun and joy to our lessons. With the addition of the puppet, we will have a new "member" of our class who can help us discuss tough issues in a fun way.
