Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is a fun and loving group of 23 kindergartners! Our school is located in the southwest area of a large city in Colorado. The amazing students at our school are hard working, kind and determined. 90% of our students live below or near the poverty line and at times our school struggles to get the resources we need to teach our students.
Our students have been learning to read this year and love when they are finally able to pick up a new book and understand the story.
My students are driven and excited to learn every day. They love to read and discover the world through hands on activities and literature.
My Project
Children have the opportunity to learn empathy through literature. There are so many social and emotional benefits of teaching empathy through literature. Literature that showcases empathy allows students to form more secure bonds with other students, parents, as well as teachers. It encourages tolerance as well as acceptance of others.
Teaching empathy through literature produces harmony and can reduce the likelihood of bullying.
The books I have carefully chosen are full of examples of children choosing kindness instead of hatred or indifference. I have chosen diverse books that my students will be able to see themselves in. Your generosity will help my students continue to develop their sense of empathy and kindness through books!
