Describing our 5th grade students is easy: they are a kind, loving and hard-working group of individuals. They are constantly working to do their best work, set goals for themselves and have fun along the way! It's amazing to see how they interact with each other, whether it's returning a book to its owner, sharing their special pens or offering words of comfort when a classmate is feeling sad. No act of kindness is too small for this group; they truly care about each other and every one of them makes our classroom feel like home. We feel so lucky to be their teachers this year!
My Project
Life lessons and character traits - such as empathy - can be effectively taught through the use of books, especially picture books, at the elementary school level. In our fifth grade classrooms, we have students from a wide range of cultural, racial and socio-economic backgrounds, and these books will complete our classroom libraries which work to represent every one of our students. We want our classroom libraries and the books we read together to represent their colors, cultures and traditions, while teaching empathy and social justice to those who are different. We also want to foster a love, acceptance and celebration of our differences from an early age. The books in this project will make a huge impact on the reading lives of our 5th grade students; seeing their faces represented in pictures will make a world of difference in both their confidence and the pride they have in who they are. Please help us achieve a more diverse and expansive library of novels and picture books so that we can teach empathy towards others, understand social justice and other people's POV, and celebrate our differences! Thank you!
