Teaching Empathy And Compassion For The Homeless And Less Fortunate
My students need to learn about empathy and compassion by making hygiene bags for our homeless and less fortunate community around our city. These will also help our own homeless students in our school.
My students are participating in a special program within our school. My school serves 900 students and has a high percentage of students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. We also house many special programs. One of the special programs we offer is for gifted learners. This program has around 300 students in grades 6-8 and I teach about 155 of these students.
All of my students care about the community they attend school and live in.
They also enjoy learning and look forward to being exposed to new material. They are inquisitive, hard working and are always looking for new challenges. Many of my students are empathetic to others, but sometimes these skills still need to be taught.
My Project
The students in my school will be working on 4 service projects throughout the school year. We want our kids to be caring and empathetic towards every person in our world.
The personal hygiene items in this project will be used to create bags for our local homeless shelters and our own homeless students.
All 900 students in our school will be showing compassion and empathy for the less fortunate, by physically putting together these self-care bags with deodorants, toothbrushes and toothpaste, socks, soap bars, and shampoos.
We hope this will spark a love for community service in our children that will spread throughout our school. Fostering caring and compassionate human beings is a top priority in our learning community.
