Help me give my students books that will provide them with the tools to handle their emotions and conflicts safely, gracefully, and with compassion for themselves and others.
My students are a combination class of first and second graders. At a Title 1 school. I teach at a Title 1 school. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. We provide uniforms and school supplies for many of them. They do not have access to internet or technology at home. Many do not have books or art supplies at home. School is the only place where they experience these things.
Being in a combination class poses challenges beyond those of typical classrooms.
My students are expected to be far more independent, both academically and socially. They spend much of their time working on their own or in groups, without much input from me, as I am providing instruction for the other grade level.
My Project
I have always believed that social emotional learning is one of the most important things to teach young children. The group of students I have this year, has made that abundantly clear. They amazing little people, with enormous feelings, and very little understanding of what those feelings are and how to handle them appropriately. In working with these students, I have realized how few resources I have to teach them the tools they will need to make it in this world.
The books in this project are all geared towards teaching emotions, and coping skills.
With the help of these books, I can explicitly teach them these skills. Students will learn what happiness, sadness, anger, disappointment, embarrassment, and many other emotions feel like. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice coping mechanisms to handle the complex feelings they experience.
No learning can take place until students are in the right mindset to learn. This project will help my students take control, so they can get themselves to the best place for learning.
