Mrs. J. from FL is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a laptop in class.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Do you remember when there were enough textbooks and additional instructional materials for the classroom and to be sent to their home? Well, those days have changed! Now, the available materials are very scarce or extremely damaged by previous years' students.
The students I serve are a population made up of mostly minority students comprised of 70% Black Non-Hispanic (a vast majority of these are of Haitian-Creole descent), 22% Hispanic, 2% White Non-Hispanic, and 3% Asian/Indian/Multiracial.
The school as a whole is classified as a Title I school, which is a title given to schools that service students receiving free or reduced lunch. Eighty-six percent of our students are classified as economically disadvantaged. Most of the students don't have Internet access or even computers at home. They aren't able to access certain sites or are not privy to some of the wonderful learning tools available through technology.
With ever-increasing changes to the curriculum and expectations for our students, a laptop within the classroom will make an impact in teaching and student learning. English Language Arts (ELA) will come alive to the students in the presentation of interactive instructional materials that will enhance and influence learning. This is much needed to provide differentiated instruction to make sure each individual student's needs are met in individual instruction, as well as group instruction. This laptop will also allow me to play audio versions of books that the lower level students need but are unfortunately blocked from school computers. There is also an extensive database of online resources available for reference materials that will likewise provide additional information the students need. Due to the fact that most of my students can't access these types of materials from home, it becomes necessary for me to provide them with such opportunities for learning.
Donating to this request will help bring those technological advances that are impacting student learning to my classroom.
It will create a positive learning experience for the students while not limiting them from materials, as is the current situation with old, outdated materials or lack there of. Furthermore, with high-stakes testing taking place on the computer for these students, it's important to incorporate technology into the classroom at all times.
