My Students

Remember that first book you read that you will never forget? Or the first book that made you so angry you wanted to throw it at the wall? But you finished it anyway. That is this book.

My students are 80 percent white, but extremely poor.

High poverty means their exposure to other cultures comes from the books and stories we read or the media they find themselves. Some of our students do not have Internet or computers at home. Some do not even have the money to purchase their own copies of the novels we read in class.

My Project

I asking 30 copies of "The Kite Runner". Being able to send the book home would allow my students to read in privacy. It will allow me to expose this book to many more students and not just read the book in class while we share copies. "The Kite Runner" creates such a gut-wrenching response from almost every student who reads it. And I use that!

Good quality literature that engages students can be hard to come by.

The best book I have to teach diversity in a school with a small percentage of diversity is "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. These are difficult days for teens and my kids are no exception. Letting them explore what life might be like in another part of the world opens them up to feeling empathy and maybe knowing what it is like to walk in someone else's shoes.
