Please help me teach my kindergarten students about the world around them. The students I teach are from low income homes and do not leave their neighborhood often. Because of this, they are not exposed to other cultures. Children's attitudes toward their race, ethnic group, and other cultural groups begin to form early in the preschool years. Children are easily influenced by the culture, opinions, and attitudes of their caregivers. I want to encourage a healthy and meaningful multicultural attitude in my classroom.
Teaching with a multicultural perspective encourages appreciation and understanding of other cultures as well as one's own. Teaching with this perspective promotes the child's sense of the uniqueness of his/her own culture as a positive characteristic and enables the child to accept the uniqueness of the cultures of others.
Kindergarten children learn mainly through play and interactive activities. I would like to capitalize on this playtime to encourage multiculturalism using storytelling, music and acting games. What children learn and experience during their early years can shape their views of themselves and the world, and can affect their later success or failure in school, work, and their personal lives. Our world is multicultural, and children need to experience the diversity outside their immediate environment.
I would like to purchase a multicultural interactive music library as well as storybooks and multicultural puppets for our storytelling center. I thank you for your help.
