Help me give my students The 57 Bus. This non-fiction text will not only help students participate in an interdistrict book club but will permanently bring thought-provoking, paradigm-shifting, non-fiction text into my classroom.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in an inner-city school where students struggle with having what they need at home, having adequate transportation to school, and having what they need to succeed in school.
Many of my students feel disconnected from the school and their education; this is only made worse when they don't have the materials they need to connect to the class or to succeed in class.
My students are lively and animated and enjoy learning; they want to learn, but they can't focus on learning when they are burdened with all of the things they don't have, including interesting texts. Providing students with relevant and relatable texts will give them the boost they need to succeed in school.
The 57 Bus is a powerful text that explores compassion through the story of two teens and the event that changed their lives. What sets this novel apart from others is that it is a non-fiction text that gives insight into a crime from the perspective of the perpetrator, victim, witnesses, and media without creating the standard Good vs. Evil struggle.
This novel will help students understand themselves, the world at large, and their responsibility to society.
The way this novel is arranged, students will not only learn from the content but, they will also see how meaning is created through craft and understand writing as a vehicle for information as well as an art form.
This text will be used in an interdistrict book club aimed at helping students connect with communities beyond their own.
