Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school's fundamental approach to education is to foster character development through a small school environment with firm discipline and high levels of parent involvement. Our program gives children from diverse cultural backgrounds an opportunity to succeed at a high level, with enriching coursework and foreign language education from kindergarten through eighth grade.
Fourth grade is an exciting year for students and teachers because it is in fourth grade that children begin assignments requiring long-range planning, collaborating on group assignments, using research tools, and developing a real writing style.
Children in my classroom test their predictions as they study complex systems, and expand their study of social studies beyond the knowledge of our local community and into the realms of Florida history and government.
The atmosphere in my classroom is light and playful, to better support my bright, energetic fourth graders in reaching their learning goals. We enjoy releasing butterflies, dancing together, and growing together.
My Project
Books remain with us. I can think of no better way to teach children to admire, respect, and love an animal than to have them step into the life of an animal-- an animal that cries for compassion.
Charlotte's Web is a children's classic, and masterfully teaches compassion towards animals.
This needs to be taught explicitly to children, and can be taught gently through reading.
My hope is to read this classic novel with my students, and to read it properly, deeply. I want this story to touch my students' conscience and help them understand issues surrounding the kind treatment of even the smallest and humblest of creatures.
