This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach four sections of 10th grade English and two Creative Writing classes. My students all offer so much to my classroom and grant me the opportunity to learn through them daily. They all live diverse lives with many stories, experiences, struggles, and life lessons to share. Some of these young souls have experienced way more in their 16 years on earth than I could ever imagine having to strive through. But yet they do. They still come to school. They still put forth effort. They still yearn to learn.
I could never place into words the admiration, gratitude, respect, or understanding I have for my students.
They continually amaze me, every day. With all that they endure, they still walk through my classroom door, and return the smile that I give to them. They are imperfect teenagers, in an imperfect world. Through it all, my students are always pushing forward, gaining knowledge and understanding, of what it truly means to leave their mark on the world.
My Project
Our students are faced with life obstacles, many that we are not always able to talk them through. These books will serve as guides to ensure that they are able to make informed decisions, beyond school. The books that I selected for the classroom library will add to the growth and development of the students and teach them lessons beyond my given curriculum. These students have plenty of questions, and some that I do not always have an answer for. But these nonfiction titles will answer those questions and allow them to gain the knowledge needed for a successful life after high school.
Life after high school is often a thought that students are scared to envision.
Many don't have a plan beyond next week, so the answer to what they plan to do after high school, is often met with confused looks and feelings of concern. I'm hoping these books will allow them to think beyond the present. Some of these books will help students recount their past, while thinking about their future. A lot of these nonfiction selections will assist students will financial planning, business ventures, inspiration, and stories that relate to their struggle.
As teachers, we are not able to reach these students in all areas of life, because of time constraint, a rigorous curriculum, and a pacing guide that we must keep up with. But these books can fill in some of the blanks that we may not have time to fill in.
