Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th thru 8th and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander. A fourth of our students are currently an English Language Learner.
With the diversity of students, our positive climate, and the drive to learn and to succeed it is an understatement that all our students are well deserving individuals.
My Project
I landed my first portion of my Art CSET last year and even started working on my credential but as soon as I viewed the reality of how much I was racking up in student loans, I knew I couldn't do this without help. Art is one of those subjects that get overlooked a lot and finding a full-time job once I get my credential will be a feat. I decided I needed to play this smart. I am currently teaching the art club at my site. I have only 1 hour a week to show them big topics, techniques but the lessons can be more rich, full of advanced techniques, cover art history in depth and help my students become a financially literate contract artist to launch their careers. Having the second CSET will allow me two years teaching while affording me a wage to keep pursuing my career goal.
To teach the business end and get in depth of how you can make it as an artist, I have to have the time in the classroom armed with a credential that allows me to teach.
Many of my students are untapped potential who without proper guidance and teaching may miss out in a field that could be their potential strength. Teaching my students to not only be a savvy business owner with their artistic skills but embedding financial literacy from my experience as a contract artist myself and weaving NDA, contracts, making invoices and getting paid to create! With my club, there is just not enough time to go in depth with everything they need to be armed with. My students come from mainly from low socioeconomic and this class can get the entrepreneur spirit and skill across if art turns out not to be their passion.
