Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth grade teacher of all subjects in Brooklyn, New York. The school in which I teach is a Title I school in a low socio-economic neighborhood.
One of the reasons I have a passion for teaching the fifth grade is because of the social studies curriculum. One of the subjects that I love to teach is immigration. The problem is that we are severely lacking the resources needed to teach immigration. The children do not have a textbook and the burden is left on the teachers to come up with ways to teach this important part of our history.
I would like to use a variety of different books and resources to teach children about immigration. The goal is to teach them not from one perspective but from many perspectives. The books that I would like to use for this study include non-fiction, historical fiction and biographies that can teach children immigration from all different perspectives: European, South American, Asian and many others.
The children will be working in collaborative groups to read and study about how different groups of people immigrated here, the hardships they endured and their triumphs. The children will be using these books during independent reading and social studies periods.
With these books the children will be able to have an experience they will remember and the culminating activity will be either a project or a book report on a topic of their choice using the books that have been donated to our classroom community.
