Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day and more importantly, their futures. We are an Adult Transition Program (ATP) that serves adult students (18-22) with special needs. Our students choose to be in this program to obtain crucial skills needed for a successful transition into adult life. Our program provides students opportunities to be more independent and have the experiences of any typical young adult.
My Project
As technology continues to lead society’s future, computers are a necessity in the classroom, however not all classrooms are equipped to promote these skills. In our classroom, we have two outdated desktop computers for a classroom of 30+ students. Our classroom lacks the tools necessary to keep up the way students need to learn 21st Century skills. With public school budget cuts, we are not able to afford a classroom set of Chromebooks and many of our students do not have the means to obtain their own.
Our students are adults with special needs that are eager to learn and and find their way in life.
Our program was developed to address students individual challenges while enhancing their abilities so they can become contributing members of society. In our program, they are learning how to plan city bus routes, create cover letters and resumes, apply for jobs, research career interests, do online banking and so much more. All of which require computers. With only 2 computers, it makes it difficult to meet all our students' learning needs. Our students get excited about learning and work hard at it. They already have many obstacles in their way and the lack of computers is an obstacle that can be remedied with your help.
Access to computers for our students will make such a huge difference in the way our students learn. Not only will they have access to a wealth of information, it will open up doors to new learning opportunities and educational activities as well as allow students to use adaptive technology to meet their needs.
