Imagine what your day would be like without access to any form of technology - no cell phone, no computer, no television. Now think about the school day of a first grader in small town Nebraska. It would be much like what you imagined - little to no access to technology.
The students in my classroom are composed of kids from middle socio-economic families, low socio-economic families, and even children who are living with alternate family members due to difficult financial hardships their families have faced.
Providing access to technology and alternate educational opportunities does not rank high in the lives of my small town and rural students.
My Project
Having access to 4 ipods in our classroom would provide these alternative learning opportunities for my students. Not only would they be able to learn how to operate the types of technology peers in higher populated areas have access to, but they would also be able to learn in a 21st century manor. My students would use these ipods to access applications that offer math skill games, reading comprehension and fluency practice, spelling and vocabulary activities, as well as a variety of other learning tools.
This project is so important to me because I don't want my students being left behind.
In an ever changing society, I want to provide the tools necessary for my students to learn to the best of their ability and be prepared not only for the coming grades but also the world they will experience when they step outside of our small community.
