My school is located in New Mexico in a small and rural community. As the school counselor, I serve our approximate 520 students whose grades range from Pre-K to sixth grade. Most of the students and families I serve come from low-income households. In fact, our school is a Title I school, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. As in most cases, I see a lot of issues in my students and their families that are usually correlated with poverty such as single-parent households, drug-related issues, immigration issues, abuse, and family instability.
However, in response to these unique challenging circumstances, my students are strong, resilient, loving, fighting, and determined individuals who manage to try their best in everything they do.
As my school's counselor, my main priority is to equip my students with the social and emotional skills they need to face any hardship, along with providing educational resources they need so they can focus on learning.
This Covid-19 pandemic has changed many things, including how students are learning. Students in my region are currently doing exclusive remote learning which means all resources used have to be digital. As a new school counselor, especially in a district where support and training for school counselors is limited, the creation of new material is crucial to meet the needs of my students. I host many individual counseling sessions that target students' specific and unique needs which means I need lessons and activities for each student. I also host Group Counseling sessions and general guidance lessons which focus on different topics. All these services I offer my students require me to gather or create resources.
Teachers Pay Teachers is a resource that I use very frequently to buy premade lessons and buy activities that can compliment lessons to make them more interactive.
Your generosity for these two gift cards will allow me to keep buying and gathering resources to meet the social-emotional and coping needs of my students, especially during this difficult time.
