Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The highlight of any teacher's career is teaching a student something new. As a kindergarten teacher, my students are being exposed to a lot of things for the first time. However, I have seen that students struggle the most with learning how to read and I want to learn how to help them do so!
I teach bilingual kindergarten in a high-poverty neighborhood in Chicago.
Although this is my fifth year teaching, I am a strong believer that in order to improve my practices I must be a lifelong learner. Although I grew up a native Spanish speaker and took several courses in high school and college to improve my Spanish, I never envisioned myself where I am now. However, once I stepped foot in my classroom and saw so many eager faces waiting to learn something new, I knew that I wasn't meant to be anywhere else.
My Project
These resources will teach me how to help my students learn to read at their own pace. With Estrellita, I will learn to create a structured routine for all students, regardless of their levels of ability. Although Estrellita was created to help teachers in instructing students how to read, it will also provide me with insight about how to incorporate writing into my daily routine. Furthermore, it will help me learn how to assess my students periodically to determine their progress.
Expectations are becoming increasingly high for kindergarten students.
By the end of kindergarten, EVERY student is expected to read, but that is a difficult feat to accomplish when students don't know letter names and sounds. The resources I am requesting will teach me how to guide each of my students, regardless of level of ability, so they can be successful readers who are well-prepared for first grade!
