Our school is an urban school in the middle of the city. We teach children from various socioeconomic groups as well as different races. About 25% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our enrollment numbers have increased for the past 5 years but our funding from the state has decreased. Our PTA (parent-teacher association) works very hard to provide for our students and teachers, but unfortunately, they cannot provide for everything. We want to have a book study for our teachers.
My Project
We have chosen several book titles that our teachers are interested in and formed our learning communities. The teachers will have complete ownership of their learning.
Students will benefit greatly from the teacher's new expertise.
Our hope is that students will also get to see the teachers reading and engaged with other readers and will see lifelong reading in action. Students will get to experience first hand their teacher's new knowledge and skills in lessons throughout the year.
The professional book clubs will meet after school monthly to talk about their books and share anecdotes about their classroom.
These groups will motivate teachers to keep reading and learning about their profession in a fun format. And just like with kids if we make the learning fun and inviting they will learn more.
