My Students
My students are a vibrant and energetic bunch. Our school is located in a low socio-economic area of Los Angeles, where the students don't have many opportunities for experiential learning outside of the classroom walls. We are a bilingual program. We cater primarily to families who are English learners and we strive to keep their culture and language alive.
In a neighborhood where resources are scarce, any support is bound to make a massive impact in the lives and learning of these students.
Because many of my students are English Learners, we work diligently to equip and prepare them for the rigor of the Common Core and to have the ability to express themselves in an academic and engrossing manner. My students work very hard to think, process, explain, and elaborate while working towards mastering two languages! They are AMAZING!
My Project
The funding for this project will allow me to attend the Harvard Project Zero Classroom conference. This conference will allow me to learn from other colleagues and professionals, while equipping me with the strategies to encourage active thinking in all aspects of learning for my students.
As my students have been working towards navigating the rigorous standards of the changing times, my big emphasis is on making them more aware of their thinking processes.
By attending this workshop, I will develop new approaches towards helping my students remain engaged while falling in love with learning and to explore their thinking as they engage with different texts in reading. I will also gain strategies from other professionals to help my students plan out and strengthen their thinking for writing and mathematics.
The strategies I gain from this workshop will allow me to differentiate my planning in order to give my English learners and students with learning struggles more support to express their thinking and concept developments.
