Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have spent seven amazing years teaching intermediate grades in an elementary school located in a high poverty community. My students are my motivation to wake up every morning and be the best me I can. They depend on me, and need me to show up and be there for them emotionally, as well as be their teacher. They deserve the best possible teacher and I set out to be that for them each and every day!
The students at my school come from diverse educational, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds which leads them to have very different needs, all of which I strive to meet daily.
The students at my school "under perform" on reading assessments as well as standardized tests which lights the fire under me to meet their literacy needs. I know that each of my students is reading at a different level, and that I need to be an informed educator who can meet their diverse needs and send them off to middle school as readers. Most importantly, I want to build my students' academic self confidences so they can be confident, successful human beings.
My Project
As an educator my job is to continue to improve my practices and the strategies that I teach to my students. Teaching students to read can be very challenging and daunting. I have students that are reading at a kindergarten level all the way up to high school. Each and every one of them deserve me to work with them within their productive zone, and push them to grow as readers.
By supporting this project, you will be empowering me to grow in my own practice which will have a ripple effect on my students.
This conference teaches new and innovative ways to meet the needs of my students. I will learn to make my instruction more engaging. I will also strengthen my knowledge of research based practices to use with my own students upon returning. My kids deserve the most knowledgeable, experienced teacher possible, and that is who you will help me become.
