Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Having a full day Kindergarten class poses many challenges for my English Language Learners. One of them is to give them the opportunity to practice newly acquired vocabulary. Another challenge is providing an environment in which students will feel free to practice speaking English without shame, frustration or embarrassment. Living in Los Angeles, I feel it is important to convey the different ethnicities and abilities our community has and to bring that back to our classroom. While I am fortunate to incorporate block play into my day, I feel I can do better. I propose a set of community block play people and block play people with differing abilities. One of our themes in Kindergarten is Community. I feel that incorporating these block play people would help them see the wide array of ethnicities and abilities our city has. The different skin toned people will help them see that families come in different colors and sizes. The differently abled dolls will introduce the students to dolls that use adaptive equipment.
