Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a high poverty school where my students face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the obstacles they face, my students enjoy school. School is their safe haven and it's the constant in their life.
Vocabulary is a real struggle for many of my students.
I want to give my students opportunities to increase their academic vocabulary. I think learning Greek and Latin roots will help them understand new words as they come across them in their independent reading. During Reading Workshop, we work on many strategies to deepen their understanding of what they are reading.
My Project
This project will give me, the teacher, resources that I need to help my students grow as readers and writers. Fountas and Pinnell just released a guide to help teachers plan minilessons for Reading Workshop. This will help me to plan lessons for my daily instruction. I also look forward to teaching my students about greek and latin roots to help them with unknown vocabulary.
Our favorite part of the day is our daily read aloud time!
I can't wait to add more picture books to our collection!! Sharing books each day builds community in our classroom and helps students deepen their comprehension.
