Help me give my students resources that will help make our classroom environment diverse, personal, and full of compassionate and kind relationships where my students respect one another’s differences!
I am blessed to teach 2nd grade at a wonderful Title I school in northeast North Carolina. Our students are loving, hard-working, easily motivated, and care about each other and their success! They thrive on competitions and reaching goals set for them throughout the school year.
Our students get excited, work harder, and stay more engaged when they are given options and choices which makes them feel valued and that their interests matter!
We are a diverse school consisting of students and families from various backgrounds and cultures as well as Coast Guard families. They are each unique and have a special way of winning our hearts with their kindness and thoughtfulness. The students and staff at our elementary school have truly become a family to one another!
My Project
This will be my first year teaching second grade, and I want to make it the best learning experience and environment for my incoming students. Two of my goals this year are to incorporate more humor into our days and to model and teach compassion, kindness, and empathy for each other's differences.
I want to identify my second graders' diverse strengths, interests, and desires outside of our four walls and to see them in more ways than just my students.
Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, last school year, I was blessed with a wonderful set of books that teach tolerance, mindfulness, and kindness. The puzzle pieces and seat spots will be used for our morning meetings and afternoon dismissals. This time together will be used for a special read-aloud time, character building, shares, and acknowledgments. The multi-colored pens will be used in various ways throughout the day, but the main purpose of their use will be to fill their classmates "buckets" with compliments and words of encouragement. The morning and afternoon meeting idea teacher resource books will be used to help me be successful in the facilitation of our morning and afternoon times together.
Thank you for considering our project. We hope you will be a part of helping our diverse classroom environment be one that is conducive for my students to become a kind and compassionate family of learners.
