Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are delightful English Language Learners in the first grade. Our school is Title 1 and over 85% of our students are at poverty level. My students have a great desire to learn and grow but often have the struggles that come along with poverty and additional strains of learning a new language and culture.
My students are amazing and deserve all the support we can provide.
They come from loving homes, and we are dedicated to giving them all we can. I have 24 students, it is almost split down the middle with 11 girls and 13 boys. 22 of my students speak a foreign language and all receive free lunch due to extreme poverty in the area. We have 5 different languages represented so speech, language, reading, and writing are subjects of great importance for my students' future.
My Project
Our wonderful class needs a classroom rug. It really is essential when teaching young students that you keep them up close and focused but it's also important to provide individual and defined space, which is what a rug provides. We gather on the carpet for morning meeting to set our intention for the day. We gather at the beginning of each subject area for whole group instruction and when modeling expectations before independent work. once again at the end of the day to recap our learning and dismiss. That is quite a bit of time on the carpet it would be extremely appreciated to have that space upgraded with purpose.
Having a rug would help us to transition quickly and keep student focus on learning rather than fussing and fighting for space.
We love having our students grouped together and up close listening but the rug would work wonders, by uses colors to define areas keeping the just right spacing to maintain everyone's personal space.
