Every day, I have the joy of creating memories of success, failure, and perseverance while teaching an amazing group of second graders.
My second graders want to be the best they can; yet, our state is last in school funding.
We are a Title I school where everyone receives free breakfast, and most receive free or reduced-price lunches. Many of my students come from trauma-filled backgrounds and low-income families, and they will be the first to go to college.
Despite these struggles, my scholars are still inquisitive. They are full of questions, from the iconic, "Why is the sky blue?" to this question I was asked the other day, "Why do apples come in different colors?"
I want my students to further their curiosity by learning how to read, write, do the math, and know the world. I also want them to go home and share learning with their families.
My Project
There is a particular group of students in my class that needs your help. These are the students that have mastered most of the phonics patterns of English and are ready to move to "real" books, in other words, books that are not limited to the types of words they include to practice decoding.
The 13 requested nonfiction titles range in topics second graders are engaged in: from animals (horses, ants, sharks, snakes), history (Statute of Liberty, Pompeii), motorcycles, the Earth and rocks and volcanoes, dinosaurs, and eating.
These books will be used for small groups of these more capable readers to learn how to "read to learn" instead of "learn to read."
