Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of teaching in a diverse school with students from different backgrounds and experiences. I am a resource teacher that works with students with special needs in all areas of academics and social/emotional needs as well.
I teach students in an inclusive environment, which means they are with their peers all day and I teach small groups within their classroom.
My students are below grade level in reading, and need books that are "just right" to motivate them to read. Classroom books are typically too challenging, so they are reading books meant for grades below them. Therefore, the books do not match their interest level, and it becomes difficult to motivate them to read.
My students also need a variety of supports and academic needs in order to be successful in the general education classroom. My team finds ways to accommodate each student on an individual basis so they can make adequate progress towards their goals.
My Project
I use a reading program with my students that focuses on specific phonetic elements or spelling patterns when reading and writing. I am asking for two different sets of Sound Out Chapter Books. My students will read these books repeatedly to build fluency and accuracy. My students need books that interest them, but also have an emphasis on the sound they are learning to read or write.
I am constantly on the go in my building.
I have an office for planning and storage. I teach in an inclusive environment which means students stay with their peers all day and I come to them to teach them in a small group within their grade-level classroom. I have to push all my supplies and materials on a small cart with a very small white board. The requested Store & Display Teaching Cart is a larger cart with a whiteboard that will allow for better visual representation in my lessons and more storage for books and supplies for students.
By donating to my project I will be able to offer a wider variety of reading material to my students, and also create an environment within our small groups that provides for a larger visual and more storage for our materials and supplies.
