Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everything I ever needed to know I learned in kindergarten! I teach the English component kindergarten in a dual language school in an urban city in Connecticut. Many of the children in my classroom have not had any preschool experiences and have not been exposed to much learning in their homes. At our school we believe that children should learn to read in their dominant language spoken at home first. As a kindergarten teacher it is my job to give them a head start with reading by teaching them letters, sounds, and how to blend sounds together to be able to read words.
Because most of my students are getting their first experiences using letters and sounds in my classroom, they need to be provided with many opportunities and materials to be able to practice putting sounds together and manipulating sounds to create words. Many children in kindergarten are young and love using their hands in the learning process. Allowing them to use hands-on materials will really help them have learning experiences that they will always remember.
If my students had materials such as stamps to create words, tactile letters that they can use to learn how to form letters, stamps to create sight words, and magnetic vocabulary words, they can practice learning sounds using hands-on materials so that they can become better prepared to learn how to blend sounds together to make words. Learning how to do this will enable them to be good readers!
Your help will make it possible for my students to have the opportunity to become good readers. Having these materials will give them the chance to practice recognizing and manipulating sounds and putting those sounds together to make and read words.
