Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Academic qualifications are important and so is financial education. They're both important and schools are forgetting one of them." Robert Kiyosaki
My students come from a high poverty neighborhood with a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single parent, foster and migrant to name a few.
My students love to be at school and enjoy learning, especially when the activities are hands on. They love to deposit play money in their bank accounts that we have in class. They started learning about saving and investing their playing money. They even have class jobs to earn playing money.
My Project
My students need one iPad to help educate my students about financial literacy. In the beginning of the year my students began to apply for jobs in class such as pet monitor, line leaders, bankers, etc. They were getting paid with play money and began to collect salaries. This allowed me to educate them on the importance of applying and getting a job. Then I asked them to deposit their earnings in class bank so they can learn about saving and investing their money through banks. I would like to have the iPad so they can play Stock-Market games online to learn the basics of financial literacy. They can log on, research potential investments and try to learn about the markets and economic news. There are various iPad applications that teach students about money management: Saving Spree, and Kids Money. I need the interactive CD-games to practice our math skills in a fun way in class. They also need the math literature books to improve their reading and learning math at the same time.
Having the iPad, the interactive games, and the math literacy books would be such a powerful addition to our financial literacy program.
I really believe that by preparing my students for the future through financial literacy, they will be far more prepared for higher education and today's workforce. This technology would make such a difference to our students and would motivate them to follow more financial projects.
